What was more amazing was the effort that went in to making this happen. Since this was a very popular vacation week, we had very limited resources to pull this off.
On the ground we had Louise Anderson using a static plane to teach kids why it flies. That might be a lot like holding up a glass of water to show what a flowing river is like, but the effort was well worth it and appreciated. She also used her handwriting skills to write out the certificates, and in general, keep the kids entertained through a long wait.
In addition, we had Leo Hickey initially doing crowd control (crack that whip!), taking pictures, and escorting parents around the ramp.
From the pilot side, we have our newest member of the ranks of YE Pilots, Ted Johnson in his amazing Bonanza. Ted, in his inaugural flight, flew 5 Young Eagles. Thank you very much Ted for joining and helping us out. We look forward to seeing you more often zipping around in that little A36 with Young Eagles.
Then Leo Hickey put down the camera, strapped on a Cherokee 180, and helped out with flying, since we had so many kids. He took 7 kids up and stayed to the bitter end.
Next is our venerable acting (and Oscar nominated for his performance) President, Bill Greenberg, who interrupted his vacation to come out and fly 15 (the most for the day) of those little rascals. BTW; nice tan.
Finally, we have our hero, Nels Anderson. Nels flew 13 kids, but what was heroic was the fact that Nels was out there ready to fly at 9 and didn't leave until he made sure every last kid flew at 2:30 PM. He was in the pattern doing his last flight when he heard Bill doing his approach to P-Town, and bid him adieu. Great job, Nels. Your car may be smaller than you, but your heart isn't.
As always, a big thanks goes to Nancy for keeping us refreshed so we could keep flying.
And finally Patti, who not only provided three of our Young Eagles, but also helped with setting up and kept checking on us to see if we needed anything else.
Considering how many kids we had, this was a fine example of everyone giving it their best and making it work. We were there late, but we got it done. My thanks to all of you for a job excellently done.
